“Plantar…what?!”
If you know, you know. And if you’ve never heard of plantar fasciitis, consider yourself lucky! It’s not a fun condition to deal with.
🦶 What is plantar fasciitis?
Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of a thick, fibrous band of connective tissue on the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. This tissue originates at the heel bone (calcaneus), runs along the sole of the foot, and attaches near the toes. Its main role is to support the arch of the foot and absorb shock during daily activities like walking and standing.

When the arch flattens excessively, the plantar fascia stretches beyond its normal limits. Over time, this can lead to tiny microtears in the tissue, causing pain and inflammation—often felt as sharp heel pain, especially with the first steps in the morning. While symptoms may improve with rest, persistent pain is a sign that professional support may be needed.
🦶 How can a Pedorthist help?

- Orthotics: Custom orthoses support the bones, muscles, and fascia by correcting mechanical imbalances. They stabilize the arch, reduce strain on the fascia, promote healing, and help prevent recurrence.
- Stretching: Daily stretching of the posterior chain—calves (gastrocnemius and soleus), Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia—reduces tension and strain.
- Footwear: Stability shoes with a rigid sole, strong heel counter, proper width, and supportive structure are key. A forefoot rocker can reduce pressure on the forefoot, while wearing supportive indoor footwear first thing in the morning helps prevent re-injury.
